Words as Screens
These photos are from a series of studio actions undertaken at a time when I was thinking about the ways that language can both connect and separate us. Words can act as screens. They are porous carriers of thoughts yet they can also filter what is conveyed intentionally or unintentionally.

Using a manual typwriter, I transcribed stories about distant places from an atlas of remote islands written by Judith Schlansky. In the process of typing, the keys punctured through the delicate paper suface leaving small openings on the page. I then mounted these pages in my studio window and photographed through the openings to capture the local view just outside my window. This new version of a familiar scene now offered a different viewpoint - a view that is mediated by another's descriptions of distant places.
